Which food is best?

Post by Ice » Thu Dec 07, 2017 11:56 pm

I received a new blue merle sheltie puppy a week ago, and need to know which foods are good for her! I really love Ice and want her to be happy! ;) ;)

My little tri puppy Leo loves Blue Buffalo, but I guess some dogs are different. I do dry kibble with some canned mixed in, because that's the only way Leo eats. He enjoys BB, but he has Lymphoma so we sometimes make him eat it. With bribing, of course. :D

Try different kibbles and canned, and see which your sheltie likes best.

I have tried many different brands, Minnie eats everything but her stomach can swing a little.

We have ended up with Fromm Gold adult that works great on her

Had I known this when Minnie was a puppy I was starting to try their Gold puppy food.

Find something your puppy likes
- But it is important that puppies get a "good" food as their bones and muscles to be developed

As you have guessed not all dog foods are created equal! The ones to consider have high meat content and low (preferably no) grain. Dogs are carnivores and have very different dietary needs than us. Generally, the more you pay, the better quality food.

See my breakdown of good vs bad dog food ingredients and how to judge a kibble label: https://www.sheltieplanet.com/what-is-t ... g-food.php I also list some of the best quality brands based on ingredient ratios: Taste of The Wild, Blue Buffalo, and Prairie come out top.

It's best to stick to the same brand of dog food once you decide as some Shelties (especially puppies) can have sensitive stomachs.
