Re: Normal?

The digging and turning before settling down is called nesting - cats do it too. In the wild the big cats and dogs do it to make their sleeping place comfortable. Funny thing with the 2 dogs in my house is that one likes it all messed up, the other likes it nice and smooth (guess who gets looked at ...

Re: Sheltie Names & Nicknames

Cool stories :) Moose was named by committee over a wine or 2. I set out one parameter, that it have a connection to Canada. I'd narrowed it down to Monty (after Mont Ste Anne in Quebec) and Canuck, when someone piped up with Moose. One of my life ambitions is to see a moose in the wild and in 4 tri...

Re: Stress & fear in the daily routine

I've just finished reading this book http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001JKV8DI A dog who's always welcome: Assistance dog trainers teach you how to socialize and train your companion dog. One of the chapters quite near the end gives a very good description of socializing a dog to everyday things a...

Re: School is for PLAYING, not learning! First time mum!

It sounds like the issue isn't the crate, it was that she had worked out in her head that the pad was the toilet. You said you've taken it out and now she cries to be let out to toilet. That's perfect!!! She's still young so you ideally want her to go right before bed to give her the best chance of ...

Re: School is for PLAYING, not learning! First time mum!

I'm at a loss on the crate issue - generally no dog will pee in their 'den', which is the point of the crate. Are you giving lots of praise and rewarding when she pees outside? Go back to basics and do that. Also, start training a trigger for when you want her to go outside, in the hopes that not he...

Re: Quit Puppy, help

Moose was very quiet early on. He was 14 weeks when I got him and didn't bark for a while. I thought I might be getting lucky and have a sheltie who didn't love to bark! I wasn't... over time he started to make more noise. Full grown he's not as noisy as some, but noisier than I would like at times!...

Re: What Dog Breeds Do Shelties Get Along Best With?

When we get a little friend for Charlie in a couple of years it would be out of another Sheltie or a rough collie. Having had an amazing collie and knowing others, they have a very placid temperament which I think would go well with a Sheltie. How cute would that be too a collie and Sheltie walking...

Re: Do they ever stop biting?

Agreed - if she doesn't go when you take her out to do so, pop her straight in her crate for another 10-20min and then try again. Keep doing it until she goes. They learn quicker if you never allow them to make mistakes. To achieve this you have to watch her like a hawk! If you catch her in the act,...

Re: Do they ever stop biting?

All puppies nip. Yelp like a puppy and move away - it's what the litter mates would do (it's what he'll do if he gets hurt too). I did it really early on with Moose just once or twice and it stopped him.

Re: Dog Socialization

I agree, I think it might just be that he is trying to initiate a game of chase. Moose does that and people always think he's trying to run away, but if the other dog gets it he will run for a bit then they swap and he chases, and in the right conditions it can go on for ages! If he wasn't coming st...
